Which Australian AI Consulting Firms Suit SMEs?

1. Truespeak

I would shortlist IOTAI if you want to pay for a plan before choosing an implementer. Its managed service covers monitoring, prompt tuning, model selection, drift checks, incident response and monthly reporting.

Watch-out: the roadmap, project build and managed retainer are separate purchases. Ask for all three costs together; IOTAI does not publish ClearLaunch or retainer prices.

3. Sunburnt AI

Sunburnt AI offers advisory, development, training, engineering and organisational change. Its consulting guide describes compliance and data sovereignty reviews and an X-Ray Workshop scoped separately from development.

I would consider Sunburnt when management needs to agree on priorities, data handling and staff adoption before commissioning software. A clearly scoped workshop can help settle those decisions.

Watch-out: no price was published for the X-Ray Workshop. Ask exactly what decisions and documents the engagement delivers, and who takes responsibility after the roadmap.

4. Thomas Wiegold

Thomas Wiegold is a Sydney developer building AI agents, workflow automation and custom software for SMEs across Australia. His process moves from discovery and a workflow audit into scope, build and handover.

The appeal is direct: the person recommending the work also writes the code. Handover includes documentation, training and transition support, with code delivered for the client's team to maintain.

Watch-out: I would favour this model when someone can own the software internally. Ask who monitors and repairs the system after transition support ends. Project prices are not published.

5. Deployus

Deployus is a Brisbane-based managed IT provider with an AI consulting practice. The offer includes opportunity assessment, custom development, integration, governance and ongoing support.

I would consider Deployus when the business wants its IT provider involved in both the AI decision and ongoing operation. Deployus explicitly describes long-term support and refinement based on performance.

Watch-out: AI sits inside a broader IT practice. Ask for experience with your particular workflow and a worked billing example: the page mentions usage-based billing without publishing dollar figures.

6. Automata AI

Automata AI is a Sydney specialist focused on putting Claude to work. Its Claude Cowork setup is $3,500 AUD and live in about a week, published on its site as at September 2026.

That focus suits a business that has already chosen Claude. Truespeak matches the model to the job, so clients do not need to choose a platform first. Those are different starting points; Claude specialisation has a clear buyer.

Watch-out: Automata positions itself around the mid-market. Ask which setup fits your team and how ongoing running works after implementation.

7. AI Consulting Group

AI Consulting Group covers data, IoT, machine learning and generative AI, including strategy, governance, implementation and support. It also offers Strategic Data & AI Think Tank workshops and long-term roadmaps.

I would shortlist it for a business with useful transaction records, sensor data or another substantial analytics problem. The site offers fixed-price and time-and-materials projects without publishing rates.

Watch-out: the offer has a strong enterprise and data-science emphasis. Ask whether the proposed scope fits the admin or follow-up problem you actually need solved.

8. Team 400

Team 400 states a focus on businesses with 50-500 employees, as at September 2026. Its services include consulting and engineering across Microsoft's Copilot Studio, Azure AI Foundry and Power Platform.

I would consider Team 400 for a larger SME with integration requirements that justify a substantial engineering project.

Watch-out: Fast Packages start from $25,000, published on its site as at September 2026. That starting price and stated audience put it above most small businesses' first automation project.

9. Mantel Group

Mantel Group positions its AI practice around enterprise work, including agent development, legacy modernisation and governance.

I would consider Mantel for a larger organisation working across enterprise data platforms with formal governance requirements.

Watch-out: that scope will usually be oversized for a small service business's first enquiry or follow-up workflow. Mantel does not publish pricing on its AI page, so establish project fit before investing time in procurement.

Should I Buy a Roadmap or a System Someone Builds and Runs?

Buy a roadmap when you need to decide which work deserves investment. Commission a build when the workflow is agreed and someone can own the finished system. Choose ongoing operation when you also need someone accountable for failures, exceptions and changes after launch.

How Much Does AI Consulting Cost in Australia?

The published prices above are implementation offers, not a market-wide consulting rate. As at September 2026, IOTAI publishes workflow projects from $2,500 AUD, while Team 400 publishes custom projects at $50,000-$250,000. The scope difference matters more than the price gap.

1. Name one workflow. Show the consultant an actual enquiry, intake form or overdue task and the steps staff take today.
2. Specify the deliverable. Put the roadmap, working software, documentation and ongoing operation into separate proposal lines.
3. Check the connections. Ask which existing tools can connect and which steps must stay manual.
4. Set approval boundaries. Identify who approves actions involving money, customers, advice or uncertainty.
5. Assign ownership after launch. Establish who sees failures, fixes them, pays usage charges and receives the code or records if the engagement ends.
