Key Takeaways
- Xero JAX chat and QuickBooks Intuit Intelligence currently carry no additional charge, so Australian practices should test the AI included in their clients' subscriptions before buying another assistant, as at 12 October 2026.
- MYOB AI BAS suits BAS preparation for GST-registered clients using MYOB Business Lite or Pro, but MYOB AI BAS remains in beta under MYOB's March 2026 rollout announcement and does not lodge BAS returns, as at 12 October 2026.
- Dext suits receipt and bill processing across client files, while Karbon AI suits email summaries and reply drafts inside an existing practice-management subscription.
- Australian accountants considering client information in ChatGPT, Claude or Copilot should assess confidentiality and privacy first: OAIC guidance says privacy obligations apply to personal information entered into AI systems.
- Truespeak is the best fit for an Australian practice that wants administration designed, built and run around existing tools, with a person approving anything sensitive; Truespeak gives no tax advice and has no completed accounting-firm result to claim.
I'd start with the tools the practice and its clients already pay for. Test the included ledger and practice-management features against one actual job, then buy extra software only where a gap remains. My guide to what accountants should automate first with AI explains how I'd choose that first job.
What Are the Best AI Tools for Accountants in Australia In 2026?
My shortlist is by need. A bookkeeper processing receipts needs a different tool from a partner reviewing fees or an administrator sorting client email. The table separates those jobs and shows where the published price needs another check.
I checked each vendor's own site for pricing and availability on 12 October 2026. Included AI still requires the underlying subscription.

Which AI Tools Are Already Built into Xero, MYOB and QuickBooks, and Which Are Still in Beta?
Xero says JAX chat is available to all subscribers and users. Automatic categorisation and matching cover high-confidence transactions. I'd test those matches and inspect the transactions left for review. On Grow, smart document capture basic extraction is labelled beta, as at 12 October 2026.
MYOB AI BAS requires review and approval before a suggestion changes anything. Access is expanding through 2026. MYOB's March announcement describes its AI suite as being at various beta stages; that does not establish AI BAS availability in AccountRight.
QuickBooks needs a closer look at the client file and user role. Intuit Intelligence chat is admin-only and beta, as at 12 October 2026. The GST Agent is beta, Finance Agent requires Advanced, and the agents page excludes customers with multi-currency enabled. QuickBooks Online Accountant itself is excluded from Intuit Intelligence availability.
What Are the Best AI Tools for Bookkeepers and Bas Agents Handling Receipts, Coding and Bas Prep?
I'd test ledger features first, then consider Dext where receipt and supplier-bill processing is the gap. Dext describes AI Assist as automating decisions about suppliers, categories and splits, and names Xero and QuickBooks Online among its integrations.
For MYOB Business Lite or Pro clients, AI BAS offers missing-receipt and GST checks. For QuickBooks clients, the GST Agent offers a pre-lodgement check. Neither description is a reason to hand over professional judgement (MYOB; QuickBooks).
My test would use a small set of previously reviewed transactions: compare suggested coding, inspect exceptions and record corrections. The next decision is whether the problem is document capture or clients failing to send documents. Those need different fixes, covered in AI automation for bookkeepers and BAS agents.
Which AI Tools Help Run an Accounting Practice?
Karbon AI offers email summaries and editable quick replies. As at 12 October 2026, Kai and Agentic Workflows are early access, while Meeting Intelligence is coming soon. I'd assess the available email features separately from the announced ones.
FYI lists released integrations with Elfworks for advice pieces and client notes, and Abacor for meeting assistance. Both are listed for Pro and Elite; Elfworks is Australia-only. These are third-party integrations, so check their terms and costs separately.
Ignition Price Insights addresses fee reviews rather than bookkeeping. Its purchased credits last 12 months, as at 12 October 2026. I'd use suggested price points as an input to a decision about scope and fees.
For broader comparisons, see accounting workflow software in Australia and client document collection tools for accountants.
Can Accountants Use Chatgpt, Claude or Microsoft Copilot with Client Information?
I'd settle permission, data handling and review before uploading a client document. A business subscription's training policy answers only part of that question.
The TPB published AI and professional-conduct guidance in July 2026. Accountants Daily's report says practitioners must verify AI outputs and obtain client permission before disclosing client information to a third party when using AI for tax agent services.
The OAIC recommends product due diligence and clear privacy notices. Its best-practice guidance recommends avoiding personal information, particularly sensitive information, in publicly available generative AI tools.
Claude Team publishes no model training on content by default, as at 12 October 2026. That does not settle client permission. For ChatGPT, check OpenAI's current business-plan data terms. Assess Copilot against the intended job and your practice's permissions too.
This is general information, not legal or tax advice. Read the TPB and OAIC guidance before adopting a client-data workflow.
What Do AI Tools for Accountants Cost in Australia, as Published?
The table shows published prices as at 12 October 2026. I'd compare the total subscription commitment, GST treatment, user minimum and add-ons before comparing a monthly headline.
FYI requires five users and quotes migration, onboarding and consulting separately. Dext's practice pricing requires at least 10 clients. Dext does not show its per-client rate without building a plan, and Ignition does not show the Price Insights add-on price on its product page. For Karbon, select AUD on its pricing page to see the rate.
Copilot Business also advertises AU$26.91 per user/month paid yearly, excluding GST, under a promotion ending 31 December 2026. Compare that annual commitment with monthly billing and the required underlying licence.
When Does a Practice Need a System Built Around Its Workflow Instead of Another Tool?
I'd consider a built system when the same administrative job crosses several tools and someone still has to move it along. For a practice, that might be an enquiry becoming an intake task, a document request needing follow-up, or an overdue fee needing a carefully worded reminder.
For an Australian accounting practice that wants administration built and then run around existing tools, with a person approving anything sensitive, Truespeak is the best fit. I've built 25 working productivity systems at Truespeak, after 20+ years in commercial roles.
Truespeak designs, builds and runs managed AI automation. A proposed accounting workflow would follow this method:
- Name the trigger, such as a new-client enquiry.
- Gather only the context needed for the next action.
- Prepare the response or task.
- Hold anything sensitive for a person's approval.
- Record the outcome and review exceptions.
Truespeak monitors systems after launch, fixes failures and improves rules. Where an existing tool has no usable connection, that step stays manual. I have no completed accounting-firm result to claim, and Truespeak gives no legal, tax or financial advice.
Start by testing what you already own. If the remaining gap is between tools, see Truespeak's work for accounting workflows or book a discovery call.
