ChatGPT Agent vs Claude Cowork vs Gemini (2026)

Key Takeaways

  • OpenAI now calls its agent-style experience ChatGPT Work, with cloud browsing, desktop file access and scheduled tasks documented as at 1 November 2026.
  • Claude Cowork is included in every paid Claude plan as at 1 November 2026, with file editing, browser actions and scheduled work.
  • Gemini Task, formerly Spark, requires a personal Google account and a Google AI Pro or Ultra subscription as at 1 November 2026; work and school accounts are excluded.
  • Published entry prices as at 1 November 2026 are US$20 monthly for ChatGPT Plus, US$20 monthly for Claude Pro and A$32.99 monthly for Google AI Pro, with different features and usage limits.
  • OpenAI, Anthropic and Google all document approval controls or safety warnings, so business owners should retain human approval for sensitive admin.

Choose ChatGPT Work if you already use ChatGPT and want cloud browsing and recurring tasks. Choose Claude Cowork if working across files and tools is your priority. Consider Gemini Task if you use a personal Google account; a Google Workspace business account currently rules out Task. Those distinctions follow the vendors' documentation linked below, checked for this comparison on 1 November 2026.

My starting point for AI admin for small businesses is the job you want done: preparing a document, drafting a reply or keeping a recurring process moving. Those jobs need different controls.

What Happened to ChatGPT Agent, and What Is ChatGPT Work?

OpenAI now calls this ChatGPT Work. Its documentation describes delegating work, following progress, changing direction and approving important actions.

ChatGPT Work runs in a managed cloud environment on the web. Local work is available through the desktop app when enabled for your account or workspace.

Google has also changed names: Gemini Task was previously called Spark. For the broader chat comparison, see ChatGPT vs Claude for Australian businesses.

What Can These Agents Do with Files, Inboxes and Browsers?

The comparison below uses vendor documentation and published prices as at 1 November 2026. Australian rollout does not establish Australian support hours or a local support desk.

ChatGPT Work's plugins include Google Drive and SharePoint, which makes the actual connection worth checking for either a Google Workspace or Microsoft 365 business. A listed connection does not establish permission to perform every action your process needs.

ChatGPT Work uses its own cloud browser, and you can take over when blocked. OpenAI documents website sign-in for Plus and Pro; do not assume Business has the same access. Some sites block automated browsing or require a CAPTCHA.

Cowork can read and write local files on desktop and interact with websites. Anthropic offers Cowork on web, desktop and mobile, with unattended scheduling. Its safety guidance says sessions run on Anthropic's servers; desktop file access should not be mistaken for entirely local processing. My Claude for business guide explains the distinction further.

What Does Each Cost, and Which Plans Include Agents?

As at 1 November 2026, OpenAI includes Work across Free, Go, Plus, Pro, Business, Edu and Enterprise. Published USD prices are Free $0/month, Go $8/month, Plus $20/month and Pro tiers of $100, $200 or $500/month. Business costs $20/user/month annually or $25 monthly, for two or more users.

Work inclusion does not mean identical tools on every plan: cloud browsing excludes Free and Go. Work and Codex share usage; Plus and Pro users can buy extra credits. OpenAI's documentation does not state tax treatment; the AUD amount appears at checkout.

As at 1 November 2026, Claude's published USD prices exclude applicable tax. Pro is $20 monthly or $200 paid annually, advertised as $17/month. Max is $100/month and Ultra $200/month. Team standard seats cost $20/month annually or $25 monthly; premium seats cost $100/month annually or $125 monthly. All paid plans include Cowork, and multi-step tasks consume more usage than quick questions. See Claude pricing in Australia for more context.

As at 1 November 2026, Google AI Pro costs A$32.99/month and Ultra starts at A$149.99/month, with another Ultra tier at A$329.99/month. GST treatment is unstated. Task requires Pro or Ultra; the cheaper Plus subscription does not meet that requirement.

Can an Agent Run Business Admin Safely Without Approval?

I would let an agent prepare an invoice reminder before I let it send one. The amount might be correct while the timing or tone damages a client relationship.

OpenAI says Work always asks for confirmation before consequential actions and warns that website instructions can be malicious. Anthropic advises avoiding sensitive local files such as financial documents and keeping close to work with real-world consequences.

Cowork offers Manual, Auto and Skip permission modes. Auto means Claude reviews actions; it is not a person approving them. Anthropic recommends manual approval for hard-to-undo actions such as messages or purchases, and always requires approval for permanent file deletion.

Google calls Task experimental, warns of unexpected behaviour and requires confirmation before browsing and sensitive actions. For client work, decide access and approvals before connecting anything. I cover this in more detail in giving AI access to your inbox and CRM.

Can a Google Workspace Business Use Gemini Task Yet?

No, as at 1 November 2026: Task requires a personal Google account. Work and school accounts are excluded. Google announced a business preview but gave no date.

The Australian announcement describes Gmail, Docs and Sheets connections. That does not override the current account restriction. I would not move client admin into a personal account to get around it.

Scheduling also needs checking. ChatGPT supports background schedules and eligible Gmail, Slack or GitHub event triggers, but local-file tasks need the computer and app running. Anthropic says scheduled Cowork tasks continue with the laptop closed. Google's current help says Task schedules stop when task mode or the device is off.

What Does Switching Agents Involve?

I would trial the same bounded job before moving a whole process: organise copies of a folder, prepare a document and hold the result for review. Check file permissions, connector access, browser sign-in and approval behaviour separately.

Then check the recurring version. Can the task start when needed, reach the right records, stop for approval and leave a useful record? A convincing walkthrough answers only part of that.

What Should You Automate Around Whichever Agent You Choose?

These agents suit a person delegating tasks. For recurring enquiry replies, follow-ups, CRM upkeep and invoice reminders, I would build around an explicit process:

  1. Name the trigger, such as a new enquiry or overdue invoice.
  2. Gather only the context needed.
  3. Prepare the next action.
  4. Require a person to approve anything sensitive.
  5. Record the outcome and review failures.

For an Australian service business that wants automation designed, built and then run around its existing tools, with a person approving anything sensitive, Truespeak is built for exactly that.

I work hands-on across Claude, GPT, Gemini, Grok and DeepSeek, and Truespeak matches the model to the job, so clients do not have to pick a platform first. I have built 25 working systems, including Hermes and Sevana, which runs scheduled checks, watches inboxes and files and asks for approval before acting. Through managed AI operations, Truespeak monitors systems, fixes failures, reviews exceptions and improves rules. Where a tool has no usable connection, that step stays manual. The first step is a discovery call about the process you want running.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does ChatGPT Work cost extra on top of ChatGPT Plus?

No. As at November 2026, OpenAI includes ChatGPT Work in the Free, Go, Plus, Pro, Business, Edu and Enterprise plans, and Plus is published at US$20 a month. Work and Codex share usage, and longer or more complex tasks use more credits. Plus and Pro users can buy extra credits when they hit limits.

Can ChatGPT run invoices and email follow-ups on its own?

ChatGPT Work supports scheduled and eligible event-triggered tasks, but access varies by plan and connection. OpenAI requires confirmation before consequential browser actions. Keep human approval for sensitive business admin.

Is Claude Cowork included in Claude Pro?

Yes. As at 1 November 2026, Cowork is included in all paid Claude plans, including Pro. Multi-step work consumes more usage than quick questions.

Do ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini prices include GST?

None of the three states that its prices include GST. As at November 2026, Anthropic publishes Claude prices in US dollars excluding applicable tax, and OpenAI publishes ChatGPT prices in US dollars without stating tax treatment, with the AUD amount shown at checkout. Google publishes Google AI Pro at A$32.99 a month without stating GST treatment.

Which agent connects to Google Workspace or Microsoft 365 tools?

ChatGPT Work documents plugins for Google Drive, SharePoint, email and calendars. Google describes Gmail, Docs and Sheets connections for Task (formerly Spark), but Task currently excludes work accounts. Check the specific connection and permitted actions before choosing.
